FAQs

Q: Are you doing it on your own?

A: Yes

Q: How far is it?

A: The calculation is around 960 miles for my chosen route. There is no fixed or signed official LEJoG route. Such a thing would never be agreed on.

Q: Are you sticking to main roads?

A: Not really. Some A roads and carriageways are just dangerous and no fun. In fact, most LEJoG fatalities have occurred on the A30 in Cornwall. Where possible I'm using quieter roads, cycle routes, canal paths and rail paths (though there will be a few short, unavoidable carriageways). Such thinking makes for a longer but safer trip.

Q: Are you camping?

A: No. Tents are heavy. I'm staying in hostels and B&Bs.

Q: Do you have a super fast road bike?

A: No. I have a good hybrid. Road/racing bikes don't really handle pannier weight well and wheels can buckle (I've witnessed this three times). I prefer having a Workhorse to a Racehorse. Also, a thin-tyre road bike would be very bumpy on trails.

Q: What if it rains?

A: I'll get wet. As accommodation is all arranged, staying back a day is not an option.

Q: Have you been training?

A: Yes. Mostly with daily cycles to work. But also a few long days out, and occasionally swinging a kettle bell around at home.

Q: What has inspired this?

A: Two things really. A read 'The Missing Postman' (and saw the film) years ago and thought of such a journey as an adventure. Secondly, Alfred Wainwright is a bit of a hero of mine (albeit a walker). He was an ordinary person who really achieved what he wanted to do.

Q: What does LEJoG mean?

A: Land's End to John O Groats, silly! A journey in the other direction would be a JoGLE!
